Failure of a Revolution: Germany 1918-1919
Published in Paperback by Banner Pr (May, 1986)
Author: Sebastian Haffner
Average review score:

The betrayal of the social democratic revolution
In German this book about the revolution of 1918/19 is called 'The Betrayal'. Yes, Germans can make revolutions and they don't buy platform tickets. It seems that everything I learned in (West German) school about that revolution was wrong. These people were as peaceful and idealistic as the East Germans in 1989/90. It wasn't a communist revolution either (as East German textbooks always told), most of its participants were from the traditional social democratic milieu and had no radical aims. They only wanted to install and keep these sowjets at least for a while in order to have control on public service and on the army officers which they thought were counter-revolutionary - in fact they really were. On the other hand they also wanted a parliament and a democratic government. No dictatorship of the proletariat. The betrayal: It was (their own?) social democratic government (Ebert, Noske) which prosecuted the revolution movement with brute force. Extremely right wing para forces were their instrument. It seems that Noske also gave the order to kill Luxemburg and Liebknecht. This book is definitively worth of a reprint in English.

The Fatal Englishman : Three Short Lives
This book is definitely worth the read. It traces the lives of 3 individuals. All live life to the full, with passion and ambition. What they have in common is not only their passion and ambition in life but that they all die young. It is an inspiring read to see what they overcame and accomplished in their quest for happiness and perfection in their life space. Read it.

"Foundations" is a veritable "bible" of WWW app developemnt
"Foundations of the World Wide Web" is a must own resource for anyone interested in learning about, developing, or extending his or her skills in the development of effective WWW applications. This book, written by contemporaries of Tim Berners-Lee, accurately covers the origin of the WWW from the perspective and motivations of those who were there, and develops into a full treatment of CGI programming and advanced multimedia applications in an online environment. Simply put, it is the best $35 you're likely to spend on a WWW Developers resource.

French Suites
Published in Paperback by Konemann (February, 1998)
Author: Johann Sebastian Bach
Average review score:

Great music in a very affordable price
Bach's French Suites are probably his best set of Suites (Maybe besides the Harpsichord Partitas). This edition is a complete urtext edition- no editorial suggestions, what so ever (so when it comes to Bach, it means no fingerings, no nothing. Only the notes themselves), and that can be quite refreshing. The book itself is made of good quality- good paper, good binding, and I also like the printing. And of course- the price. Such a low price for an Urtext edition, almost unbelievable (actually, I talked with a sheet music dealer, and he claims that for this price, it's impossible to conduct a real research for the edition. This might be true. But I don't care where does the editor finds his resources from, as long as Konemann keeps on publishing more and more new titles).

Handbook of Primary Care Medicine
Published in Paperback by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins Publishers (May, 1998)
Authors: Dale Berg, Katherine Worzala, Robert Pachner, and James L. Sebastian
Average review score:

a gist book with all that is necessary
I happened to read this book when I was preparing for my boards(step 3) recently. As I started reading this book, I felt it very useful and had special emphasis on all the cases we commonly encounter in the primary care setting. This book will make it best in conjunction with Harrisons Principles of Internal Medicine. It is particularly good in areas of Cardiovascular diseases, Pulmonary diseases, Gastrointestinal diseases, Rheumatology, Neurology. It has all the essentials we need in day to day practice setting and it also tells you to refer to a standard textbook in areas which cannot be covered in handbook. It is particularly useful for the residents who intend to take step 3 as it allows you to get the best of the gist within the short time you have during residency. I read it for my step 3 and found it very helpful. I personally would combine this with Harrisons Principles of Internal Medicine to make it 100% good internist. If at all there is not much stress in this is in areas of hematology and it says to refer to standard book. I would rate this book 5 stars for the way this book was put and the less time you spend but you remember everything of it. Thanks for giving me this opportunity to comment about this wonderful book.

Handbook to Bach's Sacred Cantata Texts
Published in Hardcover by Scarecrow Press (16 April, 1996)
Authors: Melvin P. Unger and Johann Sebastian Bach
Average review score:

A MUST FOR THE SERIOUS BACH SCHOLAR!
This book is unquestionably one of the finest resources for Bach scholarship that I've come across! I cannot praise this book enough--Charles Sanford Terry would certainly have admired this work. The layout of the texts, with its biblical references, is so very helpful when listening to a cantata. As one who has two complete recording sets of these marvelous works, I can honestly express my gratitude for this book.

Industry and Air Power: The Expansion of British Aircraft Production, 1935-41 (Cass Series--Studies in Air Power, 4.)
Published in Paperback by Frank Cass & Co (June, 1997)
Author: Sebastian Ritchie
Average review score:

How Britain's aircraft industry prepared for war
The aurhor is a historian with the British Ministry of Defense so this is a semi-official history. In the late thirties the RAF started a program to expand the production capabilities of the British aircraft industry to cope with the needs of the anticipated war. This book describes how this program was handled. The only criticism one might make is that the lenngth of the book is too short (283 pages) to completely cover such a large subject.

Integrated Management of Networked Systems: Concepts, Architectures, and Their Operational Application
Published in Hardcover by Morgan Kaufmann (15 September, 1999)
Authors: Heinz-Gerd Hegering, Sebastian Abeck, and Bernhard Neumair
Average review score:

SNMPv1/v2c/v3, TMN, CORBA, ITIL, ISO9000 - Best-of-Class
Many people in the technology industry, especially when talking about IT/Operations or NMS infrastructures, say phrases like "reference architectures" and "best practices". What do they mean? Well, this book might not define these terms, but if you do pick it up and read it, you will be able to understand what the actual Best Practices surrounding the IT/Operations space are, especially for Service Provider or Enterprise environments. This book is the only material in it's class that even mentions things like the ITIL, ISO9000, TMN OAM&P, and Workflow Management. Nobody but the best implement this stuff, and I'm sure the Andersen Consulting, PWC, and E&Y people don't want the general public getting their hands on books like this one for reason of the market niche that have built upon so well.

I'm surprised that the authors didn't cover documentation or knowledge management, as well, with topics like SGML, DocBook, or similar - but they did cover pretty much everything else. This book is the "Mythical Man Month" of the NMS/OSS world.

If you are building New World methodologies, or even building a NOC at a startup tech company, this book is totally for you.

Italian Concerto: Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue and Other Works for Keyboard
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (June, 1987)
Author: Johann Sebastian Bach
Average review score:

Great book, great music
The Italian concerto is the most accurate copy I've ever seen before of what Bach wrote, no more and no less. There's just Bach, no editor's footnotes and the only commentary from the editor is that some might not be by Bach (Those are a heck of a lot easier to play!) such as the gm Fantasia. The print's a bit on the small side, but not too much, but it's clear and easy to read. Enjoy!

J. S. Bach (Volume 2)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (June, 1967)
Authors: Albert Schweitzer, C. M. Widor, and Ernest Newman
Average review score:

Comprehensive, authentic and very instructive.
Dr. Schweitzer himself is an excellent interpretor of Bach's music, especially his organ music. His christian belief put him closer to the heart of the great German composer. Everyone who is seriously interested in Bach should read this book which is full of information and insight. To those who not only listen music but alos feel it, the book is will be a spiritual revelation. Shortcoming: in comparsion with German version, some translation is a bit vague or inaccurate.
